Brazil - Broadcasting Market - Insights, Statistics and Analysis

Dec 23, 2014 Marketreportsonbrazil.com presents a report on “Brazil - Broadcasting Market - Insights, Statistics and Analysis.” This activity was also stimulated by the new pay TV law of 2011 which removed restrictions on foreign investment and on telcos being able to provide pay TV services.

Summary

Brazil's pay TV market has experienced sustained growth since 1996, without being affected by the general economic slow-down of 2008/09. Though the country has the largest pay TV subscriber base in Latin America, pay TV penetration lags behind other major countries such as Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Mexico, and Colombia. As a result, there is ample room for further growth, which has encouraged investors to gain a foothold in the market. This activity was also stimulated by the new pay TV law of 2011 which removed restrictions on foreign investment and on telcos being able to provide pay TV services.

The principal operators in Brazil's pay TV sector are Net Serviços (Net), Sky Brasil, Claro TV, Vivo TV, and Oi TV. Other operators include CTBC/Algar Telecom, GVT TV, TVA, and SIM TV.

The América Móvil group companies Net and Claro TV together control more than half of Brazil's pay TV market. With its cable TV service, Net alone accounts for one third of all pay TV subscribers in Brazil, but its share has been decreasing due to the satellite TV boom that started around 2010.

Sky Brasil occupies a close second place in the pay TV market. It is the satellite TV leader, but faces growing competition from Claro TV, Vivo TV, Oi TV, and GVT TV.

This report provides an overview of Brazil's pay TV market, accompanied by statistical data.

Boards of Embratel and NET Serviços announce plans to merge with Claro Brasil; government releases revised ASO schedule; América Móvil's Claro gains control of Net; Net shows ambitious national expansion plans, Sky Brasil's new shareholder agreement approved by Anatel; Via Embratel satellite TV service rebranded Claro TV; Vivo TV absorbs TVA, having acquired 100% of the company; report includes the regulator's market data to October 2014, operator data to Q3 2014, recent market developments.
