LEmed to Explore New Advances in Treatment of Aging Muscles

Wan Chai, Hong Kong, 01 December, 2014 -- LEmed (Learning Edge Medical Ltd.), the specialist stem cell, laser therapy, and T-cell Modulator (TCM) research and distribution group, announced today that it will delve into new research which concluded that stem cell treatment may well restore muscle function and strength to the elderly.

A new study published earlier this year by Assistant Professor Penney Gilbert at University of Toronto determined a stem cell-based method for restoring strength to damaged skeletal muscles of the elderly. Gilbert noted that during aging some stem cells experience a protein modification that impedes the growth of new stem cells. The study was well-received by the international medical community. According to Gilbert, “The new method allowed the aged cells to grow and make more copies of themselves.” By transplanting these rejuvenated stem cells into injured or aged muscles tissue, they were remarkably able to return strength to levels on par with young, healthy tissue.

Based on LEmed’s investigations of Dr. Gilbert’s very promising study, will begin new research to delve more deeply into the possibilities for offering such treatment in the near future. Margolis stated, “The new study is great news for those of us in this age category, and it supports what we at LEmed have been saying for years about the regenerative and restorative power of adult stem cells.” Margolis further noted that “I understand that the new stem cell treatment also has the potential to significantly shorten and improve recovery from hip replacement surgery for the elderly and leave them spry in a fraction of the time.”

Skeletal muscles are some of the most important muscles in the body, supporting functions such as sitting, standing, blinking, and swallowing. In aging individuals, the function of these muscles significantly decreases. “You lose fifteen percent of muscle mass every single year after the age of 75, a trend that is irreversible,” cites Gilbert, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Biomaterials & Biomedical Engineering (IBBME) and the Donnelly Centre for Cellular & Biomolecular Research (CCBR).

In announcing LEmed’s new initiatives in this “really new, exciting field,” Margolis noted that because the stem cells would come from the person’s own muscles, there would be no problem with an immune response.
