Medical research in virtual training for epilepsy surgery

Health and Fitness

(Free Press Release) Bilbomática, together with partners ERESA, Vicomtech-IK4 (Foundation-Centre for Visual Interaction and Communications Technologies) and the Fe Hospital Research Foundation, is participating in the “Virtual training tool for epilepsy surgery” (ePilepsy) project, part of a medical research programme. In this context, Bilbomática is now working on developing an advanced navigation system aimed at providing support tools for operations by neurosurgeons. Highlighted amongst the technological advances proposed is the virtual representation of the epilepsy surgery to be carried out, enabling the training of neurosurgeons. This will enable, under real surgery conditions, having a detailed knowledge of the morphological and functional anatomy in the surgical field. Using this platform, the neurosurgeon will be able to predetermine the focus, with a visualisation of the functional image of the patient to be operated on, making possible the verification of different surgical strategies on the virtual terrain.

A second advantage of the tool involves the training of new neurosurgeons, given that this is one of the most difficult types of neurosurgery in clinical practice, in order to be able to develop their surgical skills.

Initially, various techniques of image processing (segmentation, 3D reconstruction) are required in order to obtain the models that will be used in a virtual environment. Moreover, specific planning tools will be developed, in order to define target regions or intervention approaches.
