Affordable Care Act Helps Moms-To-Be Save on Preventive Care

Jacksonville, FL, June 03, 2011 -- Data from the last two decades indicates that more babies are born in the U.S. during the summer months than in any other time of the year.  But for the first time this year, expectant moms can actually spend less on preventive care than those from years past due to the Affordable Care Act.

In keeping with its In Pursuit of Health mission, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida wants moms-to-be and all women in Florida to know that, under the national health reform legislation known as the Affordable Care Act, health plans now offer full coverage for a variety of preventive care services without having to pay a copayment or co-insurance or meet deductibles.  They include a number of screenings important for pregnant women, such as:

Anemia screening on a routine basis for pregnant women

Bacteriuria urinary tract or other infection screening for pregnant women

Breast Feeding interventions to support and promote breast feeding

Folic Acid supplements for women who may become pregnant

Hepatitis B screening for pregnant women at their first prenatal visit

Rh Incompatibility screening for all pregnant women and follow-up testing for women at higher risk

Syphilis screening for all pregnant women or other women at increased risk

Under the Affordable Care Act health plans have also removed co-pays, co-insurance or deductible requirements for other preventive care services for women, such as:

Breast Cancer Mammography screenings every 1 to 2 years for women over 40

Breast Cancer Chemoprevention counseling for women at higher risk

BRCA counseling about genetic testing for women at higher risk

Cervical Cancer screening for sexually active women

Chlamydia Infection screening for younger women and other women at higher risk

Gonorrhea screening for all women at higher risk

Osteoporosis screening for women over age 60 depending on risk factors

Tobacco Use screening and interventions for all women, and expanded counseling for pregnant tobacco users.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida believes that consumers have only begun to tap their potential to save on health care costs, including co-pays and other individual health care expenses, by becoming “health-smart” consumers of health care.
