Graduate Certificate Program Teaches Media Production and Engineering

As one of the most unique hybrid offerings at Centennial College, the Entertainment and Media Systems Design program concerns itself with providing students media education that balances a set of design skills and capabilities in media production and media engineering.

“[This] program will provide graduates with the essential experience of working with cross functional teams that are found in the workplace. It will also supply them with the skills and flexibility to lead hybrid teams and develop new solutions,” says Lynn Shannon, Director of Online Operations, Consumer Publishing Group, Rogers Media.

As it is compressed into a three-semester delivery format, the offering is only open to applicants who have a university degree or college diploma in a field related to engineering, technology or media or those with partial post-secondary education (minimum - two years university) and relevant work experience. Project-based learning is used in the media studies courses to familiarize students with an understanding of the challenges of media design, application development and content creation for wireless devices, interactive museum and retail installations, digital signage systems and networks.

As such, students obtain laboratory experience in Programmable Logic Controller, robotics, sensors, electronics and network technology project management as well as media analytics. Faculty members with extensive field experience guide students as they improve their ability to assess, develop, manage and execute a media technology project from prototype.

Prior to graduation, students have the opportunity to test out their knowledge during a 15-week industry field placement at a media technology company or interactive design firm. This work placement is facilitated by faculty, and is determined based on a student’s project work and in consultation with the host companies.
