Mi-Stories™: New Tools to Successfully Assist Adolescents and Adults with Autism

Plymouth Meeting, PA, June 01, 2011 -- The CDC reports that an average of 1 in every 110 children are born with Autism Spectum Disorder. For the more than 500,000 people under the age of 21 with ASD currently in the US, everyday tasks the rest of us take for granted are sometimes very challenging. Research reveals modeling and imitation can greatly assist people living with this disorder.

Mi-Stories™ is a collection of video social scenarios that replicate common everyday situations. It demonstrates what happens when you go to the grocery store, how to visit a restaurant, how to prepare for a job interview and appropriate behavior at work, amongst other guides. Told from the point-of-view of the user, the videos show typical situations, what variables exist and strategies to employ if you feel overwhelmed or upset.

"By watching the videos as though they are watching themselves, we believe users will feel more confident and in control when they face the situation in real life," says Deb Lord, developer of Mi Stories™. "It’s like a test-run or simulation."

These step-by-step guides are easy to use and follow. Packed with helpful hints and tips, they can be viewed again and again on an iPod, computer or television.

"It’s all about building confidence. If you know what to expect in different situations, you’re better prepared and more likely to respond appropriately," adds Deb Lord. "These guides are practical but also work on affect or emotion."
