Cancer Survivor Teaches Children How to Manage Fears

Valley View, OH, Thursday - June 16, 2010 -- Retired educator Karen Goff Dyser ( http://www.halopublishing.com ) called upon her own courage and resistance to fear while creating Bailey Bunny and the Fear Monster, a tender children’s book that helps youngsters understand the strength each person has within. An ovarian cancer survivor, the author personally knows how the crippling emotion of fear can affect a person at any age.

"The statistics on ovarian cancer survival did not offer much hope, and I began to experience a lot of fear," she said. "I did not recognize the person with the terror in her eyes. I was immobilized by fear and I had to figure out a way to deal with it." Karen’s therapist, who knew about her teaching background, challenged her to write a children’s book about fear. "I had always planned to write a children’s book after I retired, I just never got around to it."

Karen said she found the writing process very therapeutic and now Bailey Bunny and the Fear Monster, a story about a child’s recurring nightmare and how to ease the fear of it, is helping others. A picture book, illustrated by Mary Ann Bucci, Bailey Bunny and the Fear Monster creates a secure setting in which Bailey Bunny feels safe and warm and loved. The story focuses on his daily reading and rocking in his child-sized chair. When Bailey begins having a recurring nightmare about the Fear Monster taking away his rocking chair, Mama Bunny rushes to his bedside to comfort him and teaches him how to face the scary monster on his own. The author makes presentations dressed as Mama Bunny and talks about facing fears. She teaches her audience the Bailey Bunny Courage Song, written by her sister, Kay Denbow. "I’d love to get the book into as many classrooms as possible," Karen said. "My publishing and sharing this book is a part of my celebration of life."

A native of Zanesville, Ohio, the author is a former Zanesville City Schools’ kindergarten teacher, reading specialist, and curriculum director. After retiring, she worked with several districts as an educational consultant. She earned her undergraduate degree at Ohio University, master’s degree at Xavier University and administrative certification at Ashland University. Goff Dyser lives in Twinsburg, Ohio, with her husband, Joe, a tennis pro, and former high school classmate. The author has two adult children and six grandchildren.
